A Hero Within

This story is about my grandpa’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Hope you enjoy. It was a hard piece to write!

The Buzz Kill

Grandpa was a strong man who always wore his heart on his sleeve. He worked hard every day and after 30 years of employment at General Motors, he was forced to retire. He was always tinkering with something, always on the go and his mind was constantly thinking of ways to improve something.

When I was a kid, he and I would play in the orchard between our houses together. He and I were glued to the hips and most people will tell you that I was Grandpa’s girl. Looking back, I remember him rescuing me out of the apple trees when I would climb…

Her fiance refused to take part because he found it simply crazy that anyone would want to question their love. After all, “who are they to tell us whether or not we will make it.” He said time and time again.

She studies the gorgeous bead work and the low cut neckline, it’s the dress she has dreamt of since she was a little girl in pigtails and ribbons. This is the day every girl dreams about, the moment in life that changes everything.

Her Family has gathered outside her door, lining up to have a moment alone with the bride before the big moment. The cake is baked and decorated to perfection and the flowers have all arrived, everything is in place.

Short StoriesIn her room, she stands in front of the full length mirror, staring at a face she no longer recognizes. A tear rolls down her cheek and a huge lump in her throat, she squints her eyes to keep the tears from flowing. She tells herself to be strong…

This song takes me back to some of the darkest times in my life. The fear, the lying, the excuses that you make…and for what … just another bruise. I am so thankful that I made it out of my situation. Over the course of two short years, things progressed so fast, that had I not reached out to someone for help, today I would not be writing this post. Nearly six years later, Im still recovering but I look back and I can view things differently. I have grown so much ! There is HOPE!
